Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal wins Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold

Sarawak, Malaysia: Coming over a career-threatening injury, Indian badminton superstar Saina Nehwal on Sunday won the Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold defeating Pornpawee Chochuwong in a hard-fought final here.

Saina defeated the 18-year-old Thai badminton ace 22-20, 22-20 in a 46-minute clash. This was the 23 title win for the Indian star shuttler. She last won the Australian Open title in 2016.

The 26-year-old world No.10, who underwent a knee surgery in 2016, was given tough competition by her rival ranked more than 50 places below her at 67th.

In their first ever encounter, Saina was on the backfoot in the opening game as Chochuwong took four back to back points to grab the early advantage.

Saina, however, came back strongly and took full advantage of her experience to grab the first set. In the second round too, the Thai shuttler took the early advantage taking 3-0 lead.

At the end of the second set, the points were level at 20-20 but the Indian shuttler took the match away due to her experience.
