Rio de Janeiro: Rafaela Silva earned the first gold medal for Brazil on Monday after winning the 57-kilogram category of Judo.

The stadium was echoed with the chants of ‘Rafa-Rafa’ and the crowd waved the green-yellow Brazilian flags after she stood first on the podium.

The 24-year-old, athlete beat Sumiya Dorjsuren of Mongolia in the final round.

Rafael Silva was disqualified for an illegal leg grab during a fight against Hedvig Karakas of Hungary in the 2012 London Games.
