New Delhi: In a proud moment for India, its para-military and police personnel have won a record 321 medals, which include 151 gold, 99 silver and 71 bronze, at the prestigious World Police and Fire games, held in Los Angeles between August 7 and August 16.

India has doubled its tally of 156 medals it won in 2015.

The highlight of the record-setting run at the world-level event was Richa Mishra of CRPF and Mandar Anand Rao Divase of BSF who won 10 medals each in swimming.

The 101 contestants picked from Central armed police forces like CRPF, BSF, ITBP, CISF, Assam Rifles, SSB and various state police together won 147 medals in athletics (including 61 golds), 61 in shooting, 44 in swimming, 28 in archery, 24 in wrestling, 10 in boxing and 7 in judo.

Apart from Richa and Divase, who bagged 8 and 5 individual gold medals in swimming, many other Indians won multiple medals across all events. Kulwinder Kaur (Punjab police/triple jump) and Wahida Rahaman (CRPF/race, relay and steeplechase) were the top winners in athletics with 8 and 7 gold medals, respectively.

At the previous edition of the biennial games, which accepts applications from active and retired law enforcement and fire service personnel across the world, the 50-strong Indian contingent had secured 89 gold medals and 50 silver medals.

During the felicitation of the Indian contingent then, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had hoped that the medal tally doubles in the next edition of the tournament. His hope came true as Indian participants managed to more than double the tally of medals won as compared to 2015.

It is worth mentioning that the World Police and Fire Games is not much less than the Summer Olympic Games as it hosts approximately 10,000 participants every year, which is more than the number of contestants at the Commonwealth Games.

This tally might interest former Indian opener Virender Sehwag to take his Twitter battle with British journalist Piers Morgan, who had once made fun of India for not being able to win much medals at the Olympics.
