Meet the first Indian to head International Hockey Federation

New Delhi: Hockey India Chief Dr. Narinder Batra on Saturday has become first Indian to be elected as the president of International Hockey Federation (FIH) in Dubai. Batra is 12th FIH president.

He defeated David Balbirnie of Ireland and Australia’s Ken Read as 68 votes went to him. Ken got 30 votes while David managed to collect 29 votes. The competition was among 118 representatives.

Post serving as a secretary, he was chosen as a president in Hockey India in 2014. He was the major face behind the introduction of Hockey India League (HIL). The 59-year old Batra succeeded Spaniard Leonardo Negre, who was FIH chief since 2008.
