Kanpur Test: Vijay, Pujara power India to 215 runs lead at stumps
Kanpur: The Day 3 ended for Indian Cricket team on a high note with Cheteshwar Pujara and Murali Vijay hitting half-centuries helping India to post 159 runs on the scoreboard with a loss of KL Rahul (39) at stumps in the first Test of the three-match series at the Green Park stadium here on Saturday.
Vijay's 64* runs innings is flavoured with seven fours and single six while Pujara has managed to find the ropes eight times in his 80-ball knock of 50 runs.
The only loss for India was KL Rahul who was dismissed playing a casual shot on spinner Ish Sodhi’s delivery. In his 38 runs innings, he had hit eight boundaries.
Conceding India a 56-run lead, New Zealand got all out for 262 runs in its first innings.
Black Caps witnessed a sudden fall of wickets after lunch. Jadeja and Ashwin came as a major threat for NZ batsmen claiming nine wickets between them. Kiwis, which were 238/5 at lunch, collapsed adding just 24 more runs for their side.
New Zealand batsmen Santer (32), Walting (21), Craig (2), Sodhi (0) and Boult (0) failed in front of Jadeja-Ashwin’s spin. Jadeja, who played a crucial unbeaten knock of 42 runs, claimed five-wicket haul while Ashwin picked four wickets.
Earlier, on Day 3, New Zealand had got two major blows in the form of Tom Latham (58) and ace-batsman Ross Taylor (0) who got leg before to Ashwin and Jadeja respectively. Other batsmen were Kane Williamson (75) and Luke Ronchi (38) who got dismissed few overs before lunch.
On Day 2, rain had played spoilsport and forced umpires to call it a day.
India, in its first innings, had scored 318 runs.
