IPL 10 KXIP vs RCB: AB de Villiers' 89* in vain as Punjab wins by 8 wickets

Indore: A sensational 89-run inning of AB de Villiers turned futile as Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) won an one-sided match by 8 wickets with 33 balls remaining against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter at the Holkar Cricket stadium here on Monday.

Coming in to chase a moderate target of 149 runs, KXIP got a good start as openers Manan Vohra (34 off 21) and Hashim Amla (58* off 38) added 62 runs for the first wicket, before Tymal Mills got the first breakthrough for RCB.

Axar Patel, who was promoted up in the order, failed to impress as he got out after adding 9 runs off 6 balls. Captain Glenn Maxwell came to the front and smashed 43 runs off just 22 balls hitting 3 fours and 4 sixes and remained unbeaten.

Yuzvendra Chahal and Tymal Mills were the only successful bowlers for RCB, while Billy Stanlake went too expensive conceding 41 runs off his 4 overs. Captain Shane Watson had an ever worst day as he went for 28 runs in his two overs.

RCB was also very shaky on the ground as they missed some easy chances which would have increased their chances in the match.

Earlier, winning the toss and electing to bat first turned out to be a nightmare decision for RCB as they were soon reduced to 22/3 in 5 overs.

It was the excellence of AB de Villiers, who returned to the squad in place of Chris Gayle after recovering from an injury, which helped RCB on its way to a respectable total of 148/4 in final 20 overs.

He scored 89 runs off just 46 balls hitting 3 fours and 9 monstrous sixes all around the ground. With his flamboyance, RCB, which was reeling under immense pressure at 71/4 in 15 overs, added 77 runs in last 5 overs.

Except AB, KXIP managed to overpower RCB in all other departments to register their second straight win in the tournament. With two wins out of two matches, Punjab stands at the second spot in the points table, led by Sunrisers Hyderabad. RCB is at the sixth position in the table with just 1 win out of 3 matches.
