Chennai: England posted a formidable total of 477 runs, in reply, India managed to fetch 60 runs in last few overs of the match without losing any wicket on Day 2 of the final Test of the five-match series at MA Chidambaram stadium here on Saturday. India trails England by 418 runs.

At stumps, Parthiv Patel (29) and Lokesh Rahul (30)were at the crease. The mixed efforts of debutant Liam Dawson (66) and Adil Rashid (60) helped England put 477 runs at the scoreboard in its first innings.

Resuming the score of 284/4, Moeen Ali extended its innings to 146 before being dismissed by Umesh Yadav. Ben Stokes (6) and Jos Buttler (5) departed in quick succession. Liam and Rashid shared crucial 108-run partnership. Liam remained unbeaten scoring 66 runs hitting five fours and a single six while Rashid was caught behind the wicket to Umesh Yadav. Stuart Broad (19), unluckily, got run out. Amit Mishra ended the things for England bowling out Jake Ball at 12.

For India, Jadeja (3/106) was the leading wicket taker while Umesh, Ishant picked 2 wickets each. Ashwin and Mishra also claimed 1-1 wicket.

Earlier, on Day 1, opting to bat after winning the toss, England lost its openers Cook and Jennings at a score of 21. Skipper Cook fell prey to Indian spinner Jadeja once again but not before achieving a personal milestone of completing 11,000 Test runs in his 140th Test match. He became 10th batsman in the history to reach the milestone when he scored two runs in his inning.

Recovering from the early loss, classy Root and Moeen Ali consolidated the England inning registering 146-run partnership for third wicket.. Things were going well for Englishmen when Root committed a mistake sweeping Jadeja’s delivery which was slightly outside the off-stump. The ball sneaked his bat and was cleanly taken by Parthiv Patel. Umpire, however, gave him not-out but Virat Kohli and brigade wasted no time taking a review, which went into their favour. Root was unlucky to miss his 12th Test century by 12 runs.

Ishant Sharma took his 100 Test wicket in sub-continent dismissing England opener Jennings at 1 run. Later, England’s Mr. Dependable Joe Root came scoring runs fearlessly. Root along with Ali shared 146-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Things were going well for Englishmen when Root committed a mistake sweeping Jadeja’s delivery which was slightly outside the off-stump. The ball sneaked his bat and was cleanly taken by Parthiv Patel. Umpire, however, gave him not-out but Virat Kohli and brigade wasted no time taking a review, which went into their favour.
