Rajkot: Joe Root has yet again proved why he is the real contemporary of Virat Kohli. It was the ton of Root and Moeen Ali's 99 which helped England rule the last two sessions scoring 311/4 at stumps on Day 1 of the first Test of the five-match series at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium here on Wednesday.

Root's 124 run inning was studded with 11 fours and a single six while Moeen Ali (99) is just one run away completing his fourth Test hundred. Both have landed England Cricket team in a commanding postition.

The first session belonged to India taking three crucial wickets of England skipper Alastair Cook, debutant teenager Haseeb Hameed and Ben Duckett. Opting to bat after winning the toss , England openers Alastair Cook and debutant teenager Haseeb Hameed shared 51-run partnership. It was R Jadeja who claimed the wicket of England skipper when he was looking comfortable at the crease. Cook was given leg-before at his individual score of 21 runs while Hameed was given same at 31 runs to R Ashwin. Ben Duckett (13) also departed just before lunch. The only wicket Indians managed to claim in the last two sessions was of Joe Root.

For India, Ashwin picked two wickets while Umesh, Jadeja bagged single wicket each.
