India wins Junior Hockey World Cup beating Belgium 2-1

Lucknow: India on Sunday defeated Belgium 2-1 to win the Junior Hockey World Cup 2016 being played at Lucknow's Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium here.

India was leading throughout the match 2-0 until the last seconds penalty corner which was converted into a Goal by Belgium.

Harjeet Singh-led Indian team took charge in the game in the initial minutes of the game when Gurjant Singh hit one shot past Belgium goalkeeper Loic van Doren to give the home team an early lead. In some time, Simranjeet Singh smashed a field goal to take India 2-0 up in the game.

Since the second goal, India never let the Belgian attackers wander nearby the Indian goal post until the final seconds of the match when Belgium scored their first.

India had defeated Australia 4-2 in shootout in the semifinal to secure place in the final. Earlier, India clinched victory in the quarterfinal by beating Spain 2-1.

Belgium were considered underdogs before the start of the Junior Hockey World Cup 2016. They, however, stunned six-time champions Germany 4-3 in the shootout of the semifinal to book birth in their maiden World Cup final.

India has managed to win the major tournament after a long gap of 15 years.
