The Hockey World Cup 2018 began with a grand opening ceremony on November 27 at the Kalinga Stadium, in Bhubaneswar.

Last time when India won its first World Cup in Hockey it was in 1975 under the captaincy of Ajit Pal Singh. India has improved its performance during these years and now hold fifth place in world hockey ranking.
In the recent past, Indian players have shown the excellent performance yet they couldn't manage to wrest the Champions Trophy from Australia, losing the tournament by 3-1 in a shoot-off after both teams were locked at 1-1 in regulation time.

This 2018 Men's Hockey World Cup tournament will be played from 28 November to 16 December, at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, India.
The format of the tournament:
The 16 teams are divided into four groups, each containing four teams. Each team will play each other team in its group once.
The first-placed team in each group will play quarter-finals, while the second- and third-placed teams in each group will go into the crossover matches.
After crossover matches a single-elimination tournament will be played.
