ENG vs IND 1st ODI: Kuldeep demolishes England; India needs 269 to win

Nottingham: The first inning of first One Day International (ODI) was all about left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav as his maiden six-wicket haul helped India restrict England to 268 runs in 49.5 overs at the Trent Bridge here on Thursday.

Kuldeep became the first left-arm bowler ever to take six wickets in an inning in England as he conceded only 25 runs in his 10 overs. The other wrist-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal looked off colour today as he went for 51 runs in his 10 overs for just one wicket.

Umesh Yadav was the only other wicket-taker for India as he plucked one wicket during the slog overs.

After getting off to a flying start with Jason Roy (38 off 35, 6 fours) and Jonny Bairstow (38 off 35, 5 fours, 1 six) adding 73 runs for the first wicket, England lost four important wickets within a period of nine overs.

Joe Root could only score 3 runs off 6 balls while skipper Eoin Morgan scored 19 runs off 20 balls with 2 fours and a six. Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes tried to bring England out of the precarious situation after they were 4 down for 105 runs in 19.2 overs.

Buttler (53 off 51, 5 fours) and Stokes (50 off 103, 2 fours) added 93 runs for the fifth wicket but the former departed owing to some sharp wicket-keeping by MS Dhoni. Stokes also failed to last long and went back after completing his 50.

Moeen Ali also showed some fireworks during the fag end of the inning as he scored 24 runs off 23 balls with 2 fours and a six. David Willey could only score 1 run off 4 balls while Adil Rashid played a vital inning of 22 runs off only 16 balls with a four and a six.

Liam Plunkett added 10 runs off 6 balls with a boundary and was the last man to be dismissed.

As the ball was seen reverse swinging and taking huge turn, we can say that English bowlers can produce problems for Indian batsmen in chasing down a modest target of 269 runs.
