Pune: Union Minister Smriti Irani has said that she would quit politics, the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi decides to hang his boots. Speaking at the Words Count Festival here on Sunday, Irani added that she has no desire to become Prime Minister and that she only wants to work under charismatic leaders.

The BJP leader further assured that Prime Minister Modi’s political journey would span for a long time, brushing aside the speculation of his early exit from politics.

"People are presuming that Prime Minister Modi would not be there for long, but, I assure you that he will stay in politics for a long period of time,” she asserted.

On whether she did not wish to serve under leaders other than Modi, the Irani said, "Am I not currently working under leaders like Rajnath Singh ji, Nitin Gadkari ji? There are leaders with whom I have worked within the organisation for the last 18 years. I also had the opportunity to work under leaders like Vajpayee and L K Advani", Smriti was quoted saying.

The Textile Minister, who contested against Congress president Rahul Gandhi in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls from Amethi, further said that the decision of whether she would contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from the same seat or not, lies entirely with the party people. It will be decided by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah.

The BJP leader further said that people were not able to recognize her in Amethi during the 2014 elections but now they know who she is.

I decide for myself how much of my life I will give for my country, my society. In an independent country, if I cannot take a decision for myself, what is the use of that independence?" she said.

Smriti also said that she entered politics to work under charismatic leaders and considers herself lucky enough to work under the leadership of late Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi."
