Varanasi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Keshav Maurya on Sunday said that chief minister Akhilesh Yadav should give his resignation on moral grounds and accused the state government of suppressing the Varanasi stampede issue.

Maurya said that Jai Gurudev's spiritual heir Pankaj Maharaj has good connections with senior minister Shivpal Singh Yadav and hence, government is tying to let go the issue by suspending junior ranked officials.

Maurya also held the district administration responsible for the Varanasi stampede that left 25 people dead.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav should tender his resignation:

  • Maurya said that the incident is the gross negligence of the administration.
  • Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav must take the responsibility and give his resignation on moral grounds.
  • State government should also give ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakhs each to the deceased family.
  • If Pankaj Maharaj is found guilty, he must be punished.
