Supreme Court reinstates CBI Director, Alok Verma to his office
Alok and deputy, Rakesh Asthana both were on forced leave by center to settle down their prolonged dispute.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court, on Tuesday has reinstated the Central Bureau of Investigation director, Alok Verma to his office, as Alok was impounded of his powers by the Central government three months ago.
However, SC has resisted Verma from takling any important policy decisions till the selection committee meeting, which is scheduled to be held within seven days from Tuesday.
Alok and deputy, Rakesh Asthana both were on forced leave by center to settle down their prolonged dispute.

The Central Bureau of Investigation director, along with his deputy, was redeemed to office as the CBI chief after he challenged the government's move saying that he still has two years of service left. The government called it an essential step as both the top officials were fighting like "cats and dogs "and it was posing negative implications on the working of the CBI. The government said that there was no other measure that could stop the clash between the top guns of CBI. So the government decided to send both the officials on leave so as to calm down the matter.
The Supreme Court however, argued that as per rules, the government cannot take any action against the CBI chief without the consent of the selection committee. The SC said that terminating a CBI officer without the approval of the selection committee, negates the independence of the Central Bureau of Investigation.
It is to be mentioned that the selection committee comprises the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition and the Chief Justice of India.
While restoring Verma's powers, a bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice K.M. Joseph said that the matter will go to the selection committee which will look into the issue.
After CBI's verdict, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal tweeted that BJP government is putting democracy and independence of institutions at stake.
Congress lauded the decision of Supreme Court that reinstated Alok Verma as the CBI chief.
