Lucknow: In a surprise to other political parties specially its arch rival BSP, the ruling Samajwadi Party on Friday declared a list of 143 candidates to contest in the coming assembly polls in 2017.

The SP beat Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party in the sense that this was the first time that the Mulayam-led party declared the names of candidates almost one year before the assembly polls in the state. According to political pundits, the BSP was also ready with a list but the SP took a lead.

Making this announcement, the SP general secretary Shivpal Singh Yadav said that announcing the names one year in advance would help the candidates to prepare better. Out of a total of 403 seats, the SP announced candidates only on 143 seats which the party had lost in 2012 assembly elections.

The winning candidates were not touched, Shivpal said amid speculation that party might change some of the winning candidates as well. ' 'We will first concentrate on those seats which the party had lost by small margins,'' he pointed out.
