New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday announced Sheila Dixit as the Chief Ministerial candidate in the coming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, sidelining many leaders from the state including Pramod Tiwari, arguably the biggest Brahmin face of Uttar Pradesh Congress.

The party in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Ghulam Nabi Azad made an announcement in this regard while addressing media persons in New Delhi. It came a couple of days after the UP Congress Committee had a new President in Raj Babbar.

Congress, however, compensated Pramod Tiwari by appointing him the Chairman of Coordination Committee while the old war horse Sanjay Singh has been assigned the post of Chairman, Campaign Committee in the UP assembly polls due in 2017. Congress thus became the first party to finalise its entire team for the UP elections.

Talking to media persons, Sheila Dixit said it was exciting to be back to Uttar Pradesh where she hails from. In reply to a question, she said if got the opportunity, she would be happy to transform Uttar Pradesh like she did to Delhi during her three terms as the Chief Minister.

Sheila Dixit was Congress MP from Kannuaj Lok Sabha seat from 1984 to 1989 and considered to be well versed with the UP politics.

It may be mentioned that Congress is trying to match the caste equation before going into the next Vidhan Sabha elections in the state as Raj Babbar comes from a backward class and Sheila Dixit is a Brahmin face.

It is also believed that new generation political strategist Prashant Kishore, who is working for the image makeover of beleaguered Congress in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, has also given his consent on the name of Dixit as Chief Ministerial candidate.

It can also be recalled that Shiela had on June 16 last met Congress President Sonia Gandhi and advised her to take the call on the face of CM in Uttar Pradesh and even assured her that she was ready to take this responsibility on her shoulders.

Sheila is the daughter-in-law of former Congress leader Umashanker Dixit from UP, who was a Union Minister as well as the Governor. Sheila has an experience of 15 years as the Chief Minister of Delhi is being considered very close to Congress high command Sonia Gandhi.
