New Delhi: Following media reports of China resuming road construction near the Doklam Plateau along the Sikkim sector, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Friday sought an explanation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"Modiji, once you're done thumping your chest, could you please explain this?," a statement from Gandhi said on Twitter.

Gandhi's statement came after the media reported that the Chinese Army has begun constructing a road about 10 km from the point of stand-off, with more of its troops standing guard.

From mid-June onwards, Indian and Chinese troops were in a standoff situation on the Doklam plateau in the India-China-Bhutan tri-junction for over two months after a construction party of China's People's Liberation Army entered the area in mid-June ostensibly to build a road there.

The Indian Army later crossed the Sikkim border to stop the construction work.

While India and Bhutan maintained that it violated the status quo in the tri-junction, Beijing claimed that it was Chinese territory.

The imbroglio ended just towards the end of August ahead of Modi's visit to China in September for the BRICS Summit.
