New Delhi: Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda will file nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections on Tuesday. Welcoming the decision, Congress President Sonia Gandhi congratulated him. There are 4 Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka.

The last date for filing nominations for Rajya Sabha elections is 9 June. The Rajya Sabha election to be held on June 19.

Gowda's decision on Congress's request:

87-year-old Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda from Karnataka has decided to file his nomination fro Karnataka. This information was given by his son and former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Monday via tweet.

"Former PM @H_D_Devegowda has decided to contest the Rajya Sabha elections at the request of party legislators, @INCIndia Sonia Gandhi Ji and several national leaders.

He is going to file his nominations tomorrow. Thanks to Sri Deve Gowda for agreeing to everyone's consensus," Kumaraswamy tweeted.

"Finally, HD Deve Gowda responded to everyone's hope and ambition. He will be the state's top representative in the Rajya Sabha," he said in another tweet.

He said that the former Prime Minister has taken this decision at the request of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, several national leaders and party MLAs.

Karnataka Congress President DK Shivkumar thanked former PM Deve Gowda for his support in Rajya Sabha.
