Election Commission freezes AIADMK name and symbol

New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday put the AIADMK name and 'two leaves' party symbol on freeze over the brawl between the two factions of the political outfit, led by O Panneerselvam and VK Sasikala.

After EC's decision, both the factions would not be able to use party's abbreviated name and symbol in campaigning for the prestigious by election for the RK Nagar seat that turned vacant after the demise of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. The polling for the seat is scheduled on April 12.

The commission delivered its verdict after a day-long marathon hearing, after which it directed both the factions to decide different party symbols and names by tomorrow morning to contest the election.

Panneerselvam, who was a close aide of former CM Jayalalithaa had taken over the reins of the state after her death in December 2016. He, however, was allegedly removed from the CM's post by VK Sasikala, who later got convicted by the Supreme Court in a two-decade old disproportionate asset case, in which Jayalalithaa was also an accused. Sasikala was sentenced to four year in jail, but she appointed nephew TTV Dinakaran as the party's deputy chief and her proxy, E Palaniswamy, as chief minister.

She, however, still is the AIADMK chief as there is no provision to restrict a convict from heading a political outfit. The law only restricts the guilty from contesting election for six years after completing the jail term.
