Lucknow: The Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) may kick off its election campaign on the 125th birth anniversary of Babasaheb Bheem Rao Ambedkar, the architect of Indian Constitution, for the 2017 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

The BSP has always celebrated the birth anniversaries of all the great Dalit personalities with fanfare but this time the party is laying extra emphasis on the celebration as it tries to keep its Dalit vote bank safe from Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Mayawati’s preparation for the meeting:

The BSP supremo is in the state capital from the last ten days and is in continuous touch with senior party leaders in order to ensure the event's grand success.

Party sources said that the former chief minister was taking feedback with district and zonal coordinators about the preparations in their areas. She had also asked the coordinators to organise small rallies and public meetings.

The fight to save Dalit vote bank:

The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister has been monitoring the moves of the opposition parties like BJP and the Congress. In the recent past, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a lot of emphasis on Dalit leaders like Jyotiba Phule and BR Ambedkar.

Modi is even scheduled to visit Mhow, the birth place of Ambedkar on his birth anniversary.

The start:

BSP’s senior leader Brajesh Pathak said that Mayawati will first garland the statue of Ambedkar at around 0900 hours at the Ambedkar Park in Gomti Nagar area of the city.

Mayawati will then participate in many other programmes.
