The seemingly objectionable remarks on ‘Sanatan Dharma’ by Tamil Nadu chief minister M.K.Stalin’s son Udayanidhi Stalin may have come as a shot in the arm for the BJP ahead of the forthcoming assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram and the party is certain to make it a major issue in the polls during campaigning.

That the BJP planned to raise the remarks during campaigning was evident when prime minister Narendra Modi called the grand opposition alliance ‘’ghamandiya alliance’’ (arrogant alliance) which was ‘Anti-Sanatan Dharma’.

Other senior BJP leaders were also raising the remarks at their public meetings in different parts of the poll bound states.

Although the opposition parties-Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP), TMC and others-have sought to distance themselves from the controversy and even decried the remarks, albeit in a veiled manner, the BJP leaders continued to be relentless in their criticism of the I.N.D.I.A alliance.

BJP national president J.P.Nadda said that the Congress had entrusted the task of ‘Anti-Sanatan Dharma’ tirade with the other opposition parties.

‘’Congress is playing games…it has asked its alliance partners to speak against Sanatan Dharma…the people know this,’’ Nadda said.

Former MP chief minister Kamalnath, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and other opposition party leaders have said that they do not support Udayanidhi Stalin’s remarks on Sanatan Dharma.

Udayanidhi Stalin has also clarified that his remarks were ‘misconstrued’ and ‘twisted’ by the BJP and its allies.

Tamil Nadu CM M.K.Stalin has also reportedly asked his ministers and DMP leaders to ‘’tone down’’ their criticism of Sanatan Dharma, apparently on the advice of the other opposition parties.

‘’The Anti-Sanatan dharma remarks may not harm the DMK in Tamil Nadu, but it may have a bearing on the outcome of the polls in other states, especially the northern states of MP, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan,’’ remarked an opposition leader.
