Bhartiya Janata Party strength in Manipur assembly goes up
Imphal: While speaker of Manipur assembly is looking into the demand of disqualification of two Congress members who have defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party, four others joined the party on Friday, raising the total to 28.
These two members had shifted to the BJP in March last soon after the assembly elections. This had helped the party form the government in the state for the first time, ending the Congress rule.
One of them had joined on March 15 and was appointed minister. The other member, Zou, deserted the Congress later.
It was because of the mood in the party that the Congress had not staked claim to form government although it was the largest single party. The BJP was close second with 21 members but in view of assured support of seven others it urged the governor to invite it which he subsequently did.
In addition, the BJP has got support of one-member Trinamool Congress which has now merged with the BJP.
With desertion of total six members the strength of the Congress party in 60-member assembly has come down to 22.
If speaker Khemchand does not disqualify these members soon, more Congress men may cross floor.
