Lucknow: Cow vigilantes have withdrawn to their protective shells after warning by Rashtriya Swyamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat, but the self-appointed moral policing groups are yet active in some western parts of Uttar Pradesh, giving a bad name to the new government.

Some of these groups are led by leaders of the Hindu Yuva Vahini which was formed by chief minister Yogi Adityanath himself. One of these groups which is active in Meerut in the western part of the state had crossed all limits this Wednesday when it thrashed a young man who was moving with his fiance, claiming that he was a street Rameo and was harassing the girl.

What is worse, he was dragged to the girl's house and then to the police station although the girl who was accompanying him was heard continuously pleading and telling the group that he is her would-be-husband. The policemen present at the police station remained a mute witness when he was beaten by some group members inside the police station.

Expectedly, some techno-friendly young men prepared a video of the incident which was shown on the television at Prime Time. The video was later loaded on the social media and it went viral.

Incidentally, it was the second most watched video. The other was the one showing a Jawan being punched and humiliated in Jammu and Kashmir by a well-dressed young boy. The Jawan carrying a voting machine suffered all this bravely and did nothing against the boy although he was armed.

The second incident which has hogged the limelight took place the previous day Wednesday (yesterday). A boy and a girl who were loving each other and moving together in a busy area in the town were beaten mercilessly by another moral policing group which too claimed loyalty to the saffron brigade.

This is not all. Some other reports reaching the state capital talk of some policemen committing excesses in the name of preventing harassment to girls. The government has set up anti-Romeo squads and the move has been lauded by most but it has to see that genuine lovers are not unnecessary harassed by any group official or non-official.

Yogi seems to be aware of some of these reports as he has himself warned overzealous policemen against the excesses. But some more-loyal-than-the king policemen or those who wanted to settle old scores continue to play the old game.

Action against some of them may do the trick.
