NIA filed illegal case against Zakir Naik, claims lawyer

New Delhi: Controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik’s lawyer Mobin Solkar on Saturday claimed that the case filed by the National Investigative Agency (NIA) against his client was illegal.

According to Solkar, the Supreme Court had earlier granted a stay in a similar case which was filed against Naik under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and therefore, any fresh complaint on the same grounds would be invalid.

It may be recalled that office bearers of some organization had registered an FIR against Naik in 2012. In response, a petition was filed in the apex court by Naik’s counsel and the court had granted stay to all those FIR proceedings.

“There cannot be two FIRs for one offence,” said Solkar and added, “my client has not given any lecture since 2012 which can be a cause for filing a fresh complaint against him.”
