"Neither have I stopped singing nor my daily Riyaaz", says legendary Lata

Mumbai: Legendary singer, Lata Mangeshkar, still does her Riyaaz everyday and sings, though she is just three short of "nervous nineties", to use a phrase borrowed from cricket.

However, she does not sing a film song any more, although she has been "bombarded" with requests for the same. She has limited her singing to Bhajans now.

The reason is, to quote her, " the lyrics and composition of music are not suited to my style of singing". But she has nothing against them.

The legendary singer gave this reason in an interview given to a prominent English daily on the occasion of 75th death anniversary of her musician father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, which appeared on Thursday ( yesterday).

She finds the present artistes and singers equally good. The difference, if any, is that heroines like Meena Kumari and Jaya Bhaduri ( maiden name) used to learn her mannerism and way of singing before parroting the song.

As far as she is concerned, she used to sing keeping in mind the type of film, story and actor who is lip-syncing that song.

Though she has praise for every singer of her time she " enjoyed" duet songs with late Kishore Kumar the most. Among the present-day singers, she considers youngsters like Shreya Ghosal, Shaan and Anuradha Paudwal, the best.

The nightingale of India has sung hundreds of songs but she considers, Lag Jaa Gale..., as one of her best.

Recently she was mimicked by a singer in one of the music show on a television channel. Referred to it, she had nothing against the mimicry. " Even Modi jee is being mimicked. So, there is nothing wrong".

However, her elderly advice is that it should not cross the path of dignity.
