Baghpat: The western region of Uttar Pradesh, where the share of the Muslims in the total population is the largest in Uttar Pradesh, seems to be gradually shifting its stand in favour of ban on triple talaq advocated by the government at the Centre.
After Meerut and Muzaffarnagar ,some villages in Baghpat district have come out in open support of the move. The ban has been already backed by some Shia leaders in different parts of the state.
The latest to join the anti-talaq chorus is a large village in this district, named Baraut. Muslim males and females of the village held a meeting on Monday in this regard and decided to socially bouycott those Muslims who will utter talaq, talaq thrice for small reasons .
The meeting was of the view that those who divorce women for valid reasons will be spared. It has also decided to form a group which will travel to nearby villages and create a social awareness against triple talaq as it is against the honour and dignity of women.
Significantly, the male members present at the meeting too spoke against this age-old practice in one voice and promised to join the awareness campaign. The village has already formed a body-- quami Ekta Manch-- to fight against those Muslims who try to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere by hate speeches and other such stances.
A couple of days ago, a Muslim women group was formed in Muzaffarngar district to create social awareness. It is already active on the social media through Whatsapp. The group is being led by Nazia Khan, a victim of this practice herself.
Stories of more such women have already surfaced. A Muslim woman in Baghat town was divorced for refusing to part with Rs five she was keeping with herself for her child. She has two minor children to feed , besides herself.
