Imphal: Activist Irom Sharmila announced her new party, People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance, on Tuesday at Imphal Press Club. The 44-year-old lady, Sharmila, had expressed her wish to enter into politics on August 9 last, the day when she broke her 16 year long fast.

PRJA will contest the Assembly polls to be held in 2017 in Manupur. Sharmilla said that she would be contesting from Two constituencies in the state—Khurai, her home constituency and the constituency of present Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, Thoubal.

The party includes a number of activists and Entrepreneurs. Sharmila said that she would be the co-convener of the party while an academician, Erendro Leichombam, would serve as the convener of the party.

Sharmila replying to a question regarding the announcement date said that the announcement for the new political party was done while keeping in mind the importance of October 18. This date, she said , holds an important place in the History of Manipur. “The first session of Manipur assembly was held on October 18, 1948,” stated Sharmila.
