Another advisory sent to states by the Centre on service charges

NEW DELHI: A fresh set of guidelines have been issued to state governments by the Centre on service charges imposed by restaurants on customers.

In a series of tweets on Thursday, Union Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said it is the customer who has to decide whether he wants to pay extra or not.

The tweets read, "Service charge is totally voluntary and not mandatory now". "Hotels and Restaurants should not decide how much service charge is to be paid by the customer. it should be left to the discretion of customer".

This is the second advisory to the states in five months . States have been asked to ensure that restaurants put up a board announcing about it.

The second advisory has been issued because some of the eateries still have not removed the boards declaring that customers will have to pay the additional 8-10 per cent service charge.
