Ankara: Life is easy in Turkey. It has been made easier by use of technology. It was heartening to see decorative lights in a wedding ceremony here, using a unique technology. Instead of head, a two or three kilograms battery was put on the back which was attached to a LED-fitted balloon. It beautifully illuminated the wedding venue. Technologically, they are so advanced that with only one remote they can operate light, battery as well as the air-conditioner. There is a greater use of fire than the fire-works.

Gold is not much in use in this country. The yellow metal is considered “ haram”. We came to know of it when a shopkeeper selling spectacles saw my friend, Nasib Bhai, wearing glass with golden frames and made us aware. It was more than clear when I did not see women wearing gold ornaments. It does not mean that they do not like the golden colour. They very much do. For, brass is more in use in this country than steel. Women use golden colour for dying their hair, instead of black, although they could look more beautiful with black hair.

Burqa- clad women not seen:

I did not see any burqa –clad women in Antalhya during my three-day stay. I clearly demonstrated that the veil is not being used unnecessarily which was much to my liking. In other words, it means that they are moving towards modernity and want to see the 21st century world with naked eyes.

Slow life:

Nobody seems to be in a hurry here. Health-conscious young-men are seen slowly cycling by way of exercise. Treadmill and cross-trainer machines are also moved slowly. Life is not as fast as in some parts of India. They care for the facilities provided to them.

Country first:

People give first priority to the country. Everything else comes next. It was mainly for this reason that they first thought of the language and script which will be used in the country. Changes were made to suit their requirement. Kamal Pasha played a major role in this regard. He made many changes keeping in mind English and French languages. He called for researches following which difficult words in Arabic and Persian were simplified and used in Turkish language. There was a ban during that period on the use of foreign language by the press and media in the country and Turkish equivalents were found for many words used in foreign languages. Long forgotten words came in vogue.

The country became free on October 27, 1927. But it has not yet forgotten the works and deeds of Kamala Pasha. “The first and foremost duty of the youth is to ensure that the republic and its freedom is intact.” This is his famous quote and it is written on all important buildings, by way of tribute to him.
