Lucknow: Ironically, it took Uttar Pradesh government seven weeks to take action against a rather junior government functionary who had not only misguided the entire security machinery but embarrassed Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to a great extent.

It was on July 12 when some innocuous quartz powder found in the UP assembly was declared to be PETN, an explosive, by Dr Shyam Bihari Upadhyay, the Director of Forensic Lab, Lucknow. It prompted the state government to go overboard and CM Yogi was compelled to make statement in the house alleging the terror conspiracy was behind the whole incident.

After preliminary probe, it was found that Dr Upadhyay not only used expired kit but gave wrong report much to the embarrassment of the state government and the CM himself whose statement was subjected to ridicule later.

It was only on Monday, the September 4, 2017 when the state government was suspended and attached to the office of Director of Vigilance who would enquire into allegations against him.
