Remembering astronaut Kalpana Chawla, the first woman of Indian origin in space, ahead of her death anniversary on February 1, Modi said she gave out a valuable message to all Indians, especially young girls.

"Her message is, 'Nothing is impossible for women, if they have a strong will", Modi said.

Modi stated, "She left us in the Columbia space shuttle mishap, but not without becoming a source of inspiration for millions of young people the world over. It is in our culture to respect women."

Emphasising that women in India are progressing in every field and have amazed the entire world, Modi said several verses of the Holy Vedas were composed by the women.

"We talk about 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao- ‘Save the Girl Child, Educate her’.Let me tell you that one daughter is equal to 10 sons... The punya (good) we get from 10 sons, we get that from one daughter...," said Modi.

What else PM Modi stated:

  • It is in our culture to respect women. Women are advancing in many fields, emerging as leaders. Today there are many sectors where our Nari Shakti is playing a pioneering role, establishing milestones.
  • Few days ago, the Honourable President of India met women achievers, who distinguished themselves in various fields.
  • Three women Bhavna Kanth, Mohana Singh and Avani Chaturvedi have become fighter pilots and are undergoing training on Sukhoi- 30.
  • When we refer to Adivasi women, stereotypical image comes to our minds, compromising jungles, pathways in woods and women carrying kindlewood on their heads.I want to appreciate the women of Dantewada in Chhattisgarh. This is a Maoist affected area but the women there are operating e-rickshaws. This is creating opportunities, it is also changing the face of the region and it is also environment friendly.
  • Mission Clean Morna River is a wonderful initiative, where people came together to clean the river. 'Mission Clean Morna' shows that if a person is determined to do something, then nothing is impossible.
  • There’s now transparency in Padma awards. Anyone can nominate names and a common man can also be cited for Padma awards without any recommendations.
