Indore -Patna express derails in UP, 63 feared killed

Kanpur: At least 117 people were killed and over 200 injured when 14 coaches of Patna-bound 19321 Indore-Patna Express derailed near Pukhrayan railway station about 100 kms from Kanpur in under North Central Railway (NCR) in Uttar Pradesh.

The accident took place about 0300 hours on Sunday in which all AC coaches and six sleeper coaches were derailed. The railway officials from Jhansi , Kanpur and Allahabad and district officials from Kanpur rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations, said Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Law and Order of UP Daljit Chaudhary.

Of the coaches, two coaches S1 and S2 had been damaged severely in the mishap reason of which was not immediately, NCR spokesperson Vijay Kumar said. The injured were sent to hospitals in Kanpur while the IG , Kanpur Zone Zaki Ahmad and other senior officers were supervising the rescue operations. Zaki Ahmad confirmed the causalities. The rescue operations were hampered due to dark but expedited soon as Railways officals and NDRF team reached the spot.

Stranded passengers are moved to Malasa station where special train is being arranged for the injured victims.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) Northern Central Railways Manzar Karar said that special buses and food supplies are being arranged.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to personally monitor the rescue and relief operations. UP CM has announced Rs. 5 lakhs ex-gratia to kin of deceased while severely injured will get ex-gratia of Rs. 50 thousand. Those who sustained simple injuries will be given Rs. 25 thousand. Railway Minister of India Suresh Prabhu announced ex-gratia of Rs. 3.5 lakhs for victim's kin.

PM Modi has also announced ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakhs to kin of deceased and Rs. 50 thousand for seriously injured.
