Breast and Cervical Cancer awareness program: A Curtain Raiser

The month of October is observed as breast cancer awareness month. During this month different activities are conducted worldwide to create awareness about this type of cancer affecting a large population of women. There are a lot of misconceptions about cancer, particularly breast cancer, even among the educated and it is alarming that among female cancer patients, breast cancer tops the list worldwide and in India.

Breast and Cervical Cancer awareness program: A Curtain Raiser

SGPGIMS has planned a series of daylong activities to create awareness about this common cancer on the 31st of October 2021. This will begin with a bicycle rally flagged off from Rajbhawan by the Honourable Governor, UP Smt. Anandi Ben Patel at 6:15 am. The cyclists with their enthusiastic ride will create public awareness in the city of Lucknow. There will also be a walkathon in SGPGI campus flagged off by the Director at 7:00 am at the Hobby Centre, SGPGI to create awareness about breast and cervical cancer in the campus and in support of those who have suffered from this disease. Both groups will converge at Hobby Centre, by 8:00 am. Professor R K Dhiman, Director, SGPGI will address the group(s) followed by refreshments and dispersal.

Finally, public outreach activity will be carried out by SGPGIMS, Breast & Cervical CancerAwareness and Early Detection Program (BCCAEDP) team, in collaboration with health authorities of Govt. of Uttar Pradesh at Mohanlalganj block office between 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm. SGPGIMS has adopted the Tehsil of Mohanlalganj to conduct breast and cervical cancer screening programme with help of cost-effective methods. As a first step, for capacity building of available primary and community level healthcare providers, breast cancer awareness and training in clinical breast examination under the supervision of experts from SGPGIMS will be carried out for Medical Officers, Nursing Staff of CHC & PHC's, and field workers (ANMs & Asha workers) in tehsil of Mohanlalganj. This trained local network will later reach out to women in various villages/localities of Tahsil Mohanlalganj, Distt. Lucknow to provide them with information regarding awareness & their early detection.
