Unnao Gangrape: CBI detains Kuldeep Sengar; questioning underway

Lucknow: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) picked up the rape accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar for questioning from his residence at around 4.30am on Friday morning.

He has been brought to the CBI office in Lucknow but the Bharatiya Janata Party legislator from Unnao has yet not been arrested.

Updates:

• CBI detains four police personnel including Inspector Ashok Singh Bhadoria, In-Charge of Unnao's Makhi Police Station.
• Security outside the hotel in which victim's family is staying, has been beefed up.
• CBI is also questioning district hospital CMS Dr DK Dwivedi.
• Strict action should be taken against him and he should be given severe punishment: Victim girl.

The victim girl tried to set herself on fire outside the Chief Minister's residence on Sunday, claiming inaction in the gang rape case. Later on Sunday, her father was picked up by police and allegedly roughed up by Sengar's brother Atul Singh and his aides after which he died.

The incident has triggered a political storm and public outrage in the state.

FIR was registered under various sections of IPC including (POCSO Act) against the rape accused MLA but he was not arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police. Yogi Adityanath government transferred the case to CBI for further investigations and left the decision of his arrest on the investigative agency.

Allahabad High Court too intervened in the matter and questioned the ruling BJP government to furnish reasons for delay in BJP MLA's arrest. UP Government counsel told court that police has no evidence against the rape-accused MLA for arrest.
