Days after bagging gold for India, Punam Yadav, family attacked

Varanasi: Punam Yadav, who added to India's gold haul in weightlifting at 2018 Commonwealth Games, was attacked along with her family on Saturday in Rohingya here.

She was at her aunt's home when the attack took place. It all happened after a quarrel between Poonam's aunt and neighbors following which Punam and her cousin were attacked with bricks.

About seven people sustained injuries in a scuffle. Punam has, however, filed the complaint and police is investigating the case.

Poonam is born and raised in Dadupur village which is 7 km from Varanasi city.

Earlier, Punam got a warm welcome on her arrival at the village.

Notably, Punam lifted a total of 222 kg which included 100 kg in snatch and 122 kg in clean and jerk.
