Agra: Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has been elected the President of Samajwadi party for next five years.

Making this announcement, at the national party executive meeting, general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav, on Thursday in the Taj city, said that the election of Akhilesh was unanimous. The SP also proposed to effect some changes in the party constitution extending the tenure of President from three years to fine years.

Akhilesh Yadav his wife and Member of Parliament Dimple Yadav. Samajwadi Party's Rajya Sabha member Jaya Bachchan also marked her presence in the event.

Akhilesh Yadav, starting his addressal with a message from his father Mulayam singh yadav, said that Netaji has blessed the party and its leaders over phone as he was unable to attend the meet.

"I had asked Netaji to come and bless all of us and told him that the party can not grow without his wishes and blessings. He has sent his good wishes for all of us."

It could be recalled that earlier, Samajwadi Party MP Sanjay Seth had confirmed that the party convenor Mulayam Singh Yadav would be present at the National Convention in Agra.

SP leader Shivpal Yadav also remained absent from the event.
