Mental or nervous breakdown is a term that describes a period of mental distress amongst us. During this phase, we become unable to do our daily work. Earlier, it was used to refer to depression, anxiety or acute stress disorder. But it’s not used in the medical community currently as it refers to a wide range of symptoms. So, here’s what you should know about a mental breakdown.

Symptoms of nervous breakdown

Loss of hope with thoughts of suicide.

Anxiety with high blood pressure.

Dizziness.

Upset stomach.

Insomnia.

Hallucinations.

Panic attacks.

Paranoia.

Flashbacks of a traumatic event.

Causes of mental breakdown

There are different reasons for a mental breakdown. Some of them are as follows:

Excessive work stress persistently.

Any recent traumatic event in the family.

Chronic medical conditions.

Serious financial issues or major life changes.

Very poor sleep pattern.

Risk factors of mental breakdown

These are the risk factors which play a major role in a person’s life for having a mental breakdown:

Having personal history of anxiety disorder.

Recent illness or injury.

How to tackle the symptoms?

These are the ways to tackle your mental breakdown:

Opt for a talk therapy or cognitive behavioural therapy.

You can also go for other alternative treatments like massage therapy, acupuncture, yoga etc.

Cut alcohol and caffeine from your daily life.

Maintain a healthy sleep routine.

When you feel anxious then count backwards from 10 and breathe deeply.

When to consult a doctor?

It is very common to feel stressed out in certain situations. But you should be able to deal with it in a healthy way to cope with your daily life. So, when you cannot do your daily task due to excessive stress, consult your doctor right away because a breakdown can be a sign of any mental disorder.
