Nidahas Trophy: Emergency not to affect SL vs IND match

Colombo: As Sri Lanka is gearing up for imposition of Emergency for 10 days owing to communal clashes, some reports suggested that the Nidahas Trophy, the triangular T20I series comprising India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, may be cancelled.

The rumour, however, was quashed by Indian Cricket team on Tuesday. The team management's spokesperson confirmed that the situation in Colombo was completely normal and the series is going to take place as per the schedule.

The Indian Cricket team management has consulted the concerned security personnel and has understood that the situation in Colombo was under control.

In an official statement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stated, "There have been reports of curfew and an emergency being called in Sri Lanka. The situation in picture is Kandy and not Colombo. This is to notify everyone that after talking to concerned security personnel (Ministerial security division - in charge of team security) we have understood that the situation is completely normal in Colombo. If at all there is any update on the same we shall notify."

The situation across the Island nation has been tense over the last year as some hardline Buddhist groups have been blaming Muslims of forcibly converting people to Islam and vandalising Buddhist archaeological sites.

"At a special cabinet meeting, it was decided to declare a state of emergency for 10 days to prevent the spread of communal riots to other parts of the country," said the Sri Lankan government spokesperson Dayasiri Jayasekara.

"It was also decided to take stern action against people who are instigating violence through Facebook," he added.
