Aligarh: Zakir Naik, the controversial Islamic televangelist was elected to the inner council of Aligarh Muslim University in 2013.

The Inner council of the AMU takes all the important decisions. Naik served as its member for the full term and the term came to an end on June 11 last, varsity sources said.

The AMU Court or the inner council of the university is the supreme is the supreme governing body and holds the power to review the acts of university’s two important decision making bodies—the executive and the academic council.

The members of the inner council of the university are chosen by rotation according to seniority, principals of affiliated colleges, representatives of teachers' bodies and schools maintained by the varsity.

It may be mentioned that the speeches of Naik are under the scanner after it came to light that one of the Dhaka terrorists was inspired by his speeches.
