Samajwadi Party sweeps MLC polls, sitting pretty in UP council
Lucknow: The ruling Samajwadi party in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday consolidated its position in the upper house of the state legislature winning 31 out of 36 seats of legislative council on which the polling had taken place on March 3 last.
Out of 36, the SP candidates were elected unopposed on eight and on the remaining 28 seats, results of which declared on Sunday, SP romped home on 23.
In fact, the SP had already gained the upper hand on January 15 when 36 members of the upper house from local constituencies had retired and Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party ,the biggest party in the House , had slided down to 14 after 27 of SP. The ruling party needed 27 seats to get majority in the House of 100 members.
