Samajwadi Party pari-war comes out in the open

Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party in general and the first political family of Uttar Pradesh in particular have been hitting the newspapers headlines for the past one month for all the wrong reasons. The trouble began with differences between chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and his uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav who is a senior minister in his cabinet. Soon some other family members joined either of the two groups, intensifying the in-fighting. And now some outsiders have come into play, making the situation volatile.

One of party’s member of state legislative council Udayveer Singh who is considered to be close to the young chief minister shot off a letter to the national president of the party, Mulayam Singh Yadav , two days back, supporting the former and making some accusations. It was followed by another letter by another MLC making some other charges. All this has only put the party and the Yadav family in a bad light.

Unfortunately for the party, the “ private” letter was selectively released to the press on Thursday which even brought Mulayam’s second wife ( he remarried after the death of his first wife) into picture. He charged her with working from behind the scene and mainly instrumental in attack on Akhilesh by different quarters.

Singh has also alleged that she had joined hands with Shivpal who has come closer to Mulayam . According to him, she had reservation over selection of Akhilesh as chief ministerial nominee. In the initial stages Mulayam was the only choice for the post. But, later, after it was revealed that the youth had played a major role in the party’s victory he reconsidered and offered it to his son, the letter disclosed.

The wordy dual is being witnessed in the party despite opposition by senior leaders. Exchange of letters or a “letter-baji” is a new development. Akhilesh was the first to shoot off a letter to Mulayam informing him about his poll campaign. He could have gone to him and informed about it but he chose not to. May be the young brigade took it as a signal for launching the letter war.

All this must be amusing to its rivals, mainly the Bharatiya Janta Party.
