New Delhi: In a bid to eradicate child labour from the country, the Rajya Sabha (RS) on Tuesday passed a bill prohibiting employment of kids below 14 years in all conditions except where the child supports his/her family. Any person who violates any provision of the Bill shall be liable for up to 2 years of imprisonment.

The ‘Child Labour Amendment Bill’ makes employment of kids as cognisable crime for employers as well as provides for penalty for parents.

Other highlights:

  • The Bill defines children aged between 14 and 18 years as adolescents and says they should not be engaged in any hazardous occupations.
  • Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya said the development was a ‘historic step’.
  • Dattatreya also said it was aimed at total abolition of child labour.
  • Recalling his childhood, the minister said even he used to provide financial help to his family.
