RLD to come to the rescue of both Congress and SP
Lucknow: The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) has assured support to both the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) in the state council and the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled to be to be held on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
This assurance which came a day before the polls has providing much – needed relief to the two parties which were short of number to get their candidates elected. The SP was in need of additional support by nine members. To get all its seven candidates elected to the Rajya Sabha the party has to be supported by 238 members.
It has, however, to worry on another count. As many as 12 members of the party were absent from the meeting called by the party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav to keep the flock together on Wednesday. If some of them vote for another party the SP’s position will be vulnerable.
Several corrective measures have been initiated by the party to ensure that every one supports its candidates. The party would not like to antagonise either any member or supporter. A senior party leader Naresh Agrawal who spoke against the RLD was cautioned against any such remark. The party would not like to say or do anything which can hurt its members or the supporters.
Comparetively, the Congress is much better off. It has been assured support by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in addition to the RLD. Requiring additional support by five members the party can hope to sail through if both the parties rally behind it. The BSP itself has 12 surplus votes.
That leaves the BJP in a tight spot, particularly the party supported- independent candidate , Preeti Mahapatra. She cannot win without cross-voting and help by other party members. Thus, possibility of horse-trading cannot be ruled out.
