Rio de Janeiro: Indian Shuttler Saina Nehwal brings cheers for the country by defeating local hope Vicente Lohaynny 21-17, 21-17 in the women singles event here on Thursday.

Brazilian shuttler gave tough competition to Saina but she managed to take an edge post the mid-game interval.

Lohaynny fought neck-to-neck with the former world No.1. At 17-17 level, Saina took four points on the trot and clinched the first game 21-17 in a well-battled 20 minutes.

Saina Nehwal dominated the second game with 11-5 lead in the first half. The Brazilian shuttler bounced back in the second half but her efforts were not as good as to win the second game. She lost 21-17 in 19 minutes.

Saina will play her next match on Sunday against Maria Ulitina of Ukraine.
