New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury stirred a fresh controversy by making an insensitive remark over the brutal gang-rape of a woman and her teen daughter in Bulandshahr on July 29.

When the Congress leader was asked about the police action, she said, “Rape to chalte rehte hain” (rape is common) and we are fed up talking about it.”

She said that it isn’t proper to applaud police action especially when it comes nearly 12 days after the crime. The police on Monday had confirmed the arrest of remaining three accused including one Salim, the main perpetrator of the crime.

On one hand when the senior Congress leaders are trying to woo voters in the state ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, Chowdhury’s such a statement gave opposition a strong point to put party on the back foot.
