Ram Govind Chaudhary elevated as leader of opposition in UP assembly
Lucknow: Eight-time MLA and Samajwadi Party leader Ram Govind Chaudhary was named the leader of opposition in the Uttar Pradesh assembly on Monday after party president Akhilesh Yadav nominated him for the post earlier in the day.
Informing about Chaudhary's nomination, SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said, “Akhilesh Yadav has nominated Ram Govind Chaudhary as the leader of the SP Legislature Party and he will also be the Leader of Opposition.”

Akhilesh elevated Chaudhary for the post ignoring the party stalwarts like Azam Khan and Shivpal Yadav, because the 70-year-old leader stood by his side throughout the internal feud in the Yadav clan that had divided the party in two factions right ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
It may be recalled that during the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party government in the state, Shivpal Yadav was the leader of opposition.
