Rajiv Gandhi killers remission: TN govt seeks review of verdict

Chennai: The government of Tamil Nadu (TN) on Wednesday filed a petition which sought review of a Constitution Bench verdict saying the Centre and not the state government had the authority to decide whether former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s seven killers should be granted remission.

It may be recalled that the former PM’s killers were already serving a life time imprisonment.

The TN government, in its review, argues that it only seeks the Centre’s advice about granting remission to the life-term convicts.

According to what was decided by the Constitution Bench on December 3 last year, the state governments could not individually decide to grant remission to life-term convicts in cases probed by central agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
