New Delhi: Vice-president of Congress Rahul Gandhi may be elevated to the post of party’s president after the monsoon session of Parliament ends, sources believe.

The party (Congress) has told the Election Commission that it will conduct organisational elections before the end of this year. According to insiders, Sonia Gandhi is expected to relinquish her post of party president.

Owing to the fact that Sonia Gandhi remains unwell, many workers as well as leaders of the party believe that the ‘baton of leadership’ should be passed to Rahul.

Other highlights:

  • Congress currently has the least number of Members of Parliament (MPs).
  • The party has been consistently losing state elections across the country since the last two years.
  • The party will enter yet another electoral battle in Uttar Pradesh next year.
  • Currently, the party has the pressure to perform well in next year’s UP and Punjab polls.
