Ambedkar Nagar: Voting has started in the Alapur constituency in the district for Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017.

Polling for this constituency was postponed after the demise of Samajwadi Party candidate Chandrashekhar Kanaujia, who had died of heart attack while campaigning in Ambedkar Nagar on February 12 last.

Chief Electoral Officer T Venkatesh said, "Provision of postponement of voting is given in our law, if a candidate of a recognised party dies. The poll is countermanded and the party is given time to field a new candidate and the could be polling fixed for another date."

It could be mentioned that the voting was to be held in the second phase of the seven-phased state Assembly elections, on February 15, in this constituency.

Quick facts about Alapur seat:

  • The seat is currently held by Bhim Prasad Sonkar of SP..
  • The SP, this time, had fielded another candidate Chandrashekhar Kanaujia.
  • After the death of 40-year-old Kanaujia, the ruling party has fielded his widow Sangita Chaudhary.
  • As many as 9 candidates are contesting from this seat.
  • The Election Commission has postponed telecast of exit polls till 0530 hours on Thursday in view of these polls.
  • Results for this constituency will be declared on March 11.
