UP residents file PIL in SC against sacrifice of animals on Bakr-Eid

PIL

New Delhi: Questioning the sacrifice of animals on Eid al-Adha, a public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court which says the practice is cruel and barbarous. The petition also challenges the validity of Cruelty to Animals Act’s provision.

The PIL, filed by seven residents of Uttar Pradesh through a lawyer named Vishnu Shankar Jain, has sought the apex court’s ruling against the sacrifice of animals during the festival which is to be celebrated next week.

“Issue an order, a writ or direction to the effect that the practice of sacrificing animals on Bakr-Eid is unconstitutional and it cannot be followed by citizens of the country,” the petition said.
